Henry and I enjoying the outdoors.
I rode through my girlhood on a Morgan gelding called Apollo. He was a bright orange chestnut with the worst wind sucking habit and clubbed foot you ever saw. He loved to eat the reins and knock over the wheelbarrow when my sister and I were cleaning the pasture. But my sister and I had the most fun with him! He was the horse that could bob for apples and climbed over, through and around any trail obstacle, including the very steep “bridge” my father built. His conformation was too flawed for Morgan pleasure classes, but he won the dressage championship and jumping classes. And, somehow, he beat professionals on warmbloods to win first place in his Dressage class at Waterloo (kind of a big thing here in Michigan.) We had many disasters, adventures, and thrills together.
Because I had so much fun with this horse, and many more that came afterwards, I started doodling my favorite memories (like the one with the horse trying to chomp on the farrier’s butt!). These pictures became Dana’s Doodles in 2001. They have been published in Young Rider, Dressage Today, Horse & Rider and Horse Illustrated magazines, to name a few. My products are sold in the Wild Horsefeathers catalog and in tack shops nationwide. (If you are interested in carrying my items, please contact my sales rep, Sheri Ruderman at horslovr@bellsouth.net)
Now, I am married with a baby boy. My husband Tim loves horses, too. He even bought an Arabian when he was in his twenties. While I tend to gravitate to small, brown all around horses, Tim loves Friesians, Gypsies, and other romantic breeds. Right now, our son seems to be perfectly content with house cats and trucks but hopefully he shows interest in ponies soon!
If you can relate to any of my riding experiences, please feel free to drop me a line! bauer.dana@gmail.com I would love to hear from you!

Dana,
We just recently gave our daughters a Blue Roan Quarter Horse. They named him Shadow. Shadow is 5 and a sweet, sweet boy but like a big kid. Most of our friends have one of your name plates on their stall. And they are adorable. Of course, my children want one too and I can not figure which one would be best. Do you have any suggestions? Some of the ones I like are 507, 434, and 282.
Shadow is never nosey and likes to check everything out. I do like the ones with the kids hanging on the horse. I am just trying to make sure we do not get the exact one others have at the barn. One has the balerina with the girl hanging from him. Another has the one with the person laying flat out on his back. Another has a King’s Crown on his.
We are in Atlanta, GA. My friend Candy Jordan gave me your information. Would it be possible to get a name plate before Christmas and possiblly 2 sweatshirts?
Thanks so much,
Stephanie Beckwith
Dana…Hi! I am still enjoying my barn signs and still waiting for one that will be perfect for my pony Dash. I LOVE the Dashing through the Snow art on your home page. That would make a wonderful Christmas card! Keep up the great work…your “doodles” always make me smile.

Hi dana,
Will you post to Australia? I’d love the address labels. What will the price + postage be?
Cheers,
Chelle

When I decided to offer my 6 word horse story, it didn’t occur to me that I would have to pick a winner from so many delightful entries! In fact, I had to enlist the help of a few friends to pick the best.
Drum roll, please…
Congratulations to Kristi Bigelow, the winner of the Dana’s Doodles 6 Word Horse Story! Here is her winning entry:

Many thanks to everybody who entered! Opening the e-mails with your stories was like unwrapping little presents. They brightened my day and I am sure many others enjoyed reading them as well!
Now, start thinking up your entries for next year’s contest!
Dana – I have to tell you that I just love my stall sign. I have had it for over 2 years and everyone alwyas comments on how clever it it. It is the Bay Dressage Horse sign. I recommend your site all the time.
Best Regards,
Becky Tomko and my horse Council Oak “Sully”.
Hi from the Netherlands!
I think I might have been the first Dutch person who owned a ‘real Dana’s’. Too bad I had to sell the horse and the customised (you even were so sweat to change some of the colors) stall sighn is lying unused in a drawer. I still like to look at it some times.
I love your Doodles so I placed a link to your site on my blog http://www.merensben.wordpress.com under ‘My Favourite Things’.
I keep checking in from time to time, hoping that one day you’ve drawn a horse that looks a bit like my Merens Ben.
If you ever lack inspiration I would love it if you’d make a Merens without a saddle (or maybe some trailridingscene).
Keep up your great work.
Francis
