 My sister and I were lucky enough to have a great horse show mom.  A city girl, she learned how to back the horse trailer, clip horse whiskers, lead nervous horses, and make the perfect horse show bun, among many other things.  In fact, by the end she was a pretty good coach, an expert used tack purchaser,  and horse show photographer!   Now that I am older, I realize just how much work and sacrifice it is for the horse show moms.  If you are or were a HSM, please participate in my poll to let me know what the hardest part was.  And, please feel to send your comments, too!  bauer.dana@gmail.com

I’ve been going through some old favorites of mine and rediscovered my fitting & showing doodle from a few years ago.   When I was in 4-H, showmanship was a mandatory class that I never got very good at!  Does anybody know if it is still mandatory?

The horse’s hooves grow continuously and need to be trimmed regularly, about every six weeks.  A person called the farrier comes to the stable to do this job.  Many horses can be left barefoot, but if the horse is shown or worked on hard surfaces, the farrier will put shoes on the front two feet or all four.  

By the way, many barn dogs LOVE to snack on hoof trimmings.  Do you let yours?
